Dry-Pack Canning
Walk-in hours at the Home Storage Center
Watch this video: Dry-pack canning long-term food storage in #10 cans at an LDS Home Storage Center during walk-in hours.
Wards, Stakes, and private groups can call during hours of operation to schedule a dry-pack session. You must arrive promptly the day of your scheduled dry-packing session. Group size must be a minimum of 8 people and no more than 35. You must let them know how many people will be coming on the scheduled date.
Please be considerate. The missionaries are volunteering their time to operate the Center. If you have to cancel and you are going as a private group, call the center directly. If you are going with your ward or stake and need to cancel, call your coordinator.
Rules
Wear the right shoes: No open-toed shoes or sandals – it is an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulation.
Be on time: The “Cannery Rules” and Job Assignments need to be made at the beginning of every session. Be considerate of others time, some are paying babysitters, some have other appointments, some were considerate of your time and they arrived on time.
Have your order form filled out BEFORE you arrive: Order forms are collected upon your arrival so all products being purchased can be tallied. This allows us to know which products we need to start canning. Without the tally we don’t know what and how much of each product we need.
Have correct payment: Payment can only be made by cash or check. As long as you place your order with the current order form (you can always check providentliving.org to print the current one) and since you’ll be filling it out in advance – you’ll know the exact amount you need to bring in cash or pay by check (change can be made for cash purchases, but is limited so bring exact change if you can). If you have any questions about the products or pricing please call the Home Storage Center in advance of your session – they are there to help.
No outside commodities: You can only dry-pack products purchased at the Home Storage Center.
Children are allowed: They must be ten years old or mature enough to dry-pack in the cannery, but have to be 16 to operate the canner.
You can find the printable order form/price list on the Provident Living Website or for youe convenience we have one listed on this site.
Portable Dry-pack Canners
There are three portable canners available for check-out so you can dry-pack your own bulk food in your home. They are heavy but compact enough to fit in a regular size trunk. For liability reasons, the canners cannot be used in a church building. You need to remember to buy the needed amount of cans, lids, oxygen packets, and boxes when you check-out the canner. You can reserve the canner by calling the Sandy Home Storage Center. The canner must be returned a few days after check-out. At this time, there is a two months waiting list. For more information about portable dry-pack canners, read “Dry-Pack Food at Home with a Portable Canner”.
If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to call the cannery directly or call you local coordinator – Tina Monson 801-576-9619
